A reader from Davenport, Iowa wrote:
I have wished so much that I had asked my parents more questions while they were alive because I really know very little about their thoughts and experiences.
12 year old M.H. from Dausman, Wisconsin wrote:
I am writing to you to thank you for writing the book Grandpa Tell Me Your Memories, because I have never known that much about my grandpa, ever! He was very interested in this present and completed it in less than a week! Here are some things I found:(in his book)
"Whenever my Grandmother saw a whirlwind, she would look through a knothole in a piece of wood she kept at her side. She claimed she could see the devil in the whirlwind. When she died I asked my parents for that knothole. They said absolutely not. They burned it." and "I was assigned to baby-sit my brother Leo one day when I was building something. He kept getting in my way, so I locked him in a big toolbox that belonged to my father. My mother was very upset with me. . . . ."
Thank you, Ms. Lashier for letting me know more about my Grandpa. His story could win Best Story for 100 years and more!
K.B. (4th grade) wrote in his Children's Journal:
My scariest thing was when I jumped off of a cliff about 15 feet high. When I jumped it felt like I forgot my stomach.
S.L. from Whittier, California wrote:
I want to thank you for the best book you didn't write. A few years ago I bought Grandma Tell Me Your Memories. I gave it to my Grandma and told her it was my Christmas gift to please fill it out for me. Years passed and the book left my mind. My Grandma was like a mother to me, the greatest person I ever knew. She passed away in January. Two days after she died, my mission was to find that little pink book. I prayed she filled out at least a couple of pages. I found it. She filled out everything that applied to her. I think I may have paid under $10 for something that is now priceless...
J.B. from Omaha, Nebraska wrote in his Grandpa's journal:
When I was about 7 I stubbed my big toe badly. It got infection in it, swelled up big, and was very painful. Papa took me to a Dr. Coughlin, who was an army doctor in W.W.1. He was rough and gruff. He looked at the toe, and then said to me, "Look at that car out there." As I did so, he shoved a sharp knife blade into my toe (no anesthetic) Man, I howled! But he got out the infection, and I recovered.
Tiff from Rhinelinder Wisconsin wrote in her Children's Journal:
My mom tells me and my sister not to take drugs, stay away from strangers, buckle our seatbelts, clean our room, never eat in the living room, and don't stay up late on school nights.
J.L. from Pensacola, Florida wrote in his Dad's journal:
My 1st allowance I remember was 25 cents per week. I'd go to the show on Saturday night for 10 cents. I had to give 10 cents to Sunday school collection each Sunday. That left me with 5 cents to spend on a fudgesicle at the drug store.
B.R. from Sonora, California wrote:
Thanks for writing Grandma tell me your Memories! . . . . It prompts Grandmas to do it now, no matter how much or how little they write. It focuses an elder person by asking right and appropriate questions. The answers reflect love, joy, happiness, sorrow, struggle, blessings--all the portions of life we pass through. Answers may also teach lessons, set goals, inspire the generation that seeks those answers. They also show a personal, human, loving side of a grandparent that the reader never even knew existed . .
